5 out of 5 stars Ignore the last review this is excellent   August 18, 2006

LCD televisions have improved greatly over the past couple of years. I bought this set for my mum and the setup was sooo simple - just plug it in and the auto setup does the rest - even she could have done it!!!

I agree slightly that some pictures look a bit pixelated on analogue and slightly in weak areas of freeview but the thing is these sets are designed to show off everything warts and all. If there is a good strong signal the picture is awesome if the signal is weak the image is not as good as a decent 100hz CRT telly.

Plug in a DVD player with progressive scan into the component video inputs and you will be impressed. Plug in a HD source like a XBox 360 and you will see the future of televisions - so crisp and detailed.

Buy this set - almost as good as the V series but cheaper, and I think a bit better looking.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - and good value for money   September 7, 2006

We've had this for around a month now and have been delighted with it. Ease of set up and use is really good -- I had it up and running within five minutes, and we've hardly had to consult the manual since day 1. With good sources the picture quality is superb, and the Freeview reception is better than on either of the standalone "set top" boxes that we have for other TVs.

We purchased this from Empire Direct through amazon.co.uk - ordered on Sunday afternoon, delivered on Tuesday afternoon: can't ask for better service than that!

4 out of 5 stars Great picture and user experience, sound a little weak   September 6, 2006

I've had my TV for a few days now, and I'm getting more impressed with it by the day.

The picture quality is excellent, and the remote control/user interface are very good. When used with a Sony DVD Recorder via their Fastlink technology, you can pick record events from the Freeview Programme Guide and let the TV drive the recorder. Having seen this S-class model alongside the V-class I could only see a marginal improvement in picture quality from the V-class, which didn't in itself justify the extra cost.

The sound quality from the inbuilt speakers is a little below par, and lacks bass. But the TV has audio-out sockets to link to an amplifier so there is an easy workaround when you want some extra punch from your DVD collection.

Overall it's a classy model and recommended.

The initial set-up of this well-built TV was very simple. A well written hand-book gets you switched on and viewing without delay. The picture is superb on the built-in Freeview (I am NOT in an official Freeview area!) and the only slight snag is my Channel 5 is missing on F/view but ok on analogue. The sound from the smallish speakers is perfectly adequate..but no more than this. Remote control is chunky and not fiddly to use. I am very pleased with this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Special   October 15, 2006

This television lived up to my expectations in all aspects. After fine tuning the settings which I have customized to my specifications the first thing I noticed is how clear and vibrant the colours are to the point that in some scenes which were filmed outside in daylight, you actually feel like you are looking out of the window. The contrast is deep and vivid which is where the Bravia Engine comes in. The TV has a light sensor built in which works well to always give you the best picture in all lighting environments and there are plenty of settings within the menu to fiddle with the clour, brightness, contrast, noise reduction etc. To get the truly best picture from this television I believe you will need to customise your settings rather than relying on the pre-sets.

One issue I have noticed that if you view the picture close up, it tends to look pixelated and a bit fuzzy but this for me is a minor gripe as once you step back the picture really comes to life. Remember this television is built for High Definition video which I believe is where it will really show it's true colours but regardless Sony have produced an amazing product here.

The TV's audio is clear and crisp though I do feel lacks a bit of punch and to some degree you may feel like you are listening to the audio through computer speakers if you walk into the room before seeing the television. However again a minor gripe as you cannot fault the actual sound quality. I have connected my TV up to my home cinema system which at the end of the day I believe is truly needed to enjoy the whole experience.

The remote does it's job as you would expect though I may say that the designers should have spent a bit more time there refining the look and feel of it.

Connectivity is great on the TV. You can connect up to 5 different pieces of equipment such as your DVD player, game station, camcorder etc. and also your PC. Another great feature is the smartlink scart connection on the back which, if you own a Sony recordable DVD player or Sony HDD recorder, the TV will communicate with these via the scart connection so you can set the TV's timer to record a program and it will set your recorder automatically to start recording when the program starts. This will only work when the TV is in the digital freeview mode.

I had a quick look through the manual supplied but to be honest the setup can be done without it. It is that easy. If you are able to receive freeview, when you first turn on the TV, the setup menu takes you through the automatic tuning of the digital channels and then tunes the analogue ones.

I have a few issues in all with this TV but I have given it 5 stars because every time I see it I cannot stop to stare whether it is on or off as it's stunning. From it's design, which I think is one of the nicest out of the Bravia range, to the vivid picture and colour detail. The pricing on this model is good for what you are getting and I can assure you, you will not be disappointed. I highly recommend this product as I have been happy with it from the day it arrived and get happier with it as each day goes by.
