I have spent 18 months looking for a flat screen telly and have seen lcd technology improve significantly over that time. Who would have thought back at the start of 05 that a 40" lcd could have been this good!

Having read the reviews and watched a number of demos I am completely blow away by this tv. Sure it's expensive but it's worth every penny when priced against the competition. I am utterly amazed at how much the price has fallen over the last 8 months. At this price the tv is an absolute steal.

The picture is superb, with great darks and amazing colours. The refresh rates are great and sports have none of the tell tail blurring, it's all crisp and clear. The digital tv pictures are fantastic, so much better than my freeview box and sony CRT. The sound is fantastic with great depth and fine detailing, for such narrow speakers the bass is mind blowing. The picture quality from my DVDs run through a Sony RDR860 are great.

Ill keep it short and sweet. This set is undeniably awesome. It is 40 beautiful inches of clear, crisp 1080p magic. I recently purchased a samsung 40" that is 1080p but have always had my eye on this beast - and as soon as I saw the price tag come down to a mere £1600 (50% of its original price when released) on here I knew I had to get rid of the samsung. Almost every review I have read on this set (including the ones below, thank you very much!) has rated it so highly and I can honestly say that it is worth every single last penny, infact its an absolute bargin! Just looking at it without the screen on screams sheer class - the glass skirting with the Sony lighting is fantastic. But when you do press that button on the solid remote control you are heavily rewarded - I should state that I am commenting on the HD quality with a PS3 hooked up via HDMI. The detail is so much better than my previous samsung and the colours are wonderful, and this is all with factory settings. I have optimised my set with Digital Video Essentials, which Amazon stock, and for those of you that want to make the most of this screen I strongly recommend this, the end result is near perfect. Playing PS3 games and watching Blu Ray discs is just so much more pleasurable now than with the Samsung - it really is better than a cinema. However I don't output the audio to the TV, I have a sound system for that - as alot of you will know, most LCD/Plasma speakers are useless, this one included - but if I'm only watching freeview then the TV speakers are fine. Talking of freeview - the in-built digital tv is great quality, standard def visuals look spot on but do look flat and washed out after hours of 1080p experience! The programme guide is very user friendly and not shabby looking like so many freeview boxes.
So to conclude I would have to rate this as a must have for any living room, even if you haven't taken the leap to HD yet - its stylish looks and ultra realistic visuals are sure to blow anyone of you away (apart from those that can afford £6k pioneer plasma's!)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Picture in SD and HD. Sound a little disapointing.   June 3, 2007

I bought this TV in November 2006 after months of reading reviews and waiting for the model to be available in the UK. I have it connected to Sky HD and an XBoX 360 with HD-DVD Drive.

Many reviews one reads say that LCD TVs give a poor picture with standard definition pictures (via freeview or Sky), however, from a normal viewing distance, I find it hard sometimes to tell the difference in the picture between SD and HD. Up-close, it is obvious.

With an HD input, the qulity is exceptional. It is with football on Sky HD that the benefits of the TV's HD capability come through the most - you'll never want to view a football match in SD again! The responsiveness of the TV's picture means that you do not get the slur or jumps in picture that I have seen on other LCD screens with fast moving objects.

Sony make a point of the 178 degree viewing angle. It is for real. The picture is as clear, bright and colourful from any seat in my lounge.

The sound from the TV is a little disapointing. To me, it lacks depth. I have the TV in a corner, which may be the reason that the virtual surround sound effects are barely noticable. If you are going to invest in a TV this size and in HD equipment, then a home cinema surround sound system is essential to appriciate it fully. So I bought one last month - and the difference is remarkable.

5 out of 5 stars A PRICE WORTH PAYING LADIES AND GENTS!!!   April 10, 2007

Where do i start.. This HD Ready X series LCD has 1920x1080 resolution with 1080p signal capability via HDMI, Live Colour Creation and BRAVIA ENGINE EX for high performance picture quality. The X series features optional colour bezels. The picture quality is amazing. The colours are vivid, the edges sharp and the movement fluid with none of the drag or shadow rubbish which I have seen on other televisions.

i have read other peoples reviews on this television and people have had problems setting it up, for me this wasnt a problem, i had this beauty set-up Within 10 minutes of opening the box all of the digital and analogue channels were tuned in, the tv was wired up and ready to go. 3 scart sockets at the back mean that I can plug in the skybox, video and dvd player easily. HDMI sockets and pc input mean I will be able to plug in future equipment on my wish list example MY PS3 AWAITS =) i cant wait to hook that beauty up and be even more blown away.

The remote control is simple to follow and heavy in the hand which enhances the feeling of quality..

The silver and glass surround make the set less intrusive in the room. it really is a beautiful looking t.v looks fantastic great vocal point to any room.

Now for the Sound im an honest person and ive read on other reviews that sound quality is rather poor. i tend to disagree I found it to be more than acceptable for everyday use. if you are a huge dvd fan and are looking for a tv for home cinema I think a home cinema kit is essential, but this goes for every t.v so please dont let this put you off this fantastic t.v as its not a negative.. as i feel to get the best out any t.v a home cinema kit is always essential. this is for the techincal bods lol

i watched 'Lord Of The Rings' with some friends of mine and it was like watching a new film. The texture the movements were apparent as were flecks of light etc it was just a whole new experiance added to my viewing pleasure as it will do yours if you guys do decide to take the plunge and buy this fantstic t.v

now that i have shared my excitment with you fellow amazon users i shall tell you about weaknesses within the t.v
What are the weaknesses? to be honest i cant find any i promise i dont work for sony lol im just amazed at the quality of this t.v only thing i would complain about is the price but we pay for what we get guys you want quality we have to pay the price.

Bottom line is this is my first hd television and the upscale of quality from my previous 26" Sony television almost reminds me of the feeling gained when I saw the first colour tv image having moved from my black and white you guys remember those days moving from black and white to colour or am i just old lol

anyway i know this telly itsnt cheap, but however I do think the price is worth paying as you really will be blown away buy it's quality. save your pennies and buy this baby.. you wont be dissapointed i promise you... you will be telling your future grandchildren about this one lol

First of all , as already mentioned , you can buy this model much cheaper elsewhere - so shop around before you buy ! To be honest I nearly went for the W series as I simply couldnt see a difference in the picture with the W and X side by side , so it was actually the looks of the X series which persuaded me to part with the extra £300 or so .
The glass and silver bezel look simply stunning ! and apparently you can buy different coloured bezels ? even when turned off its a masterpiece ! HOW do they get the lights INSIDE the glass ? there are no wires ?
When running standard defintion through the TV I must say its not quite as good as my friends Pioneer model ( apparently the Panasonic is good too ) but when you run a HD transmission through the TV its simply awesome ! Im a SONY tart so there was no question of any other brands unfortnately !!
Im running SKY HD , XBOX 360 and a SONY DVD player that upscales to 1080P all through the TV - all look stunning !
My only gripe would be that when the TV was fitted to the wall , the positioning of the sockets at the back of the TV ( particuarly the HDMI sockets ) made it very awkward to fit ... but with a third pair of hands and teasing of the cables it was OK . Maybe it would be better to put all the sockets UNDERNEATH the TV to make it easier ? Its my only gripe .. Oh and the remote is RIDICULOUSLY massive ... ?
Id recommend this TV to anyone who is thinking of a 40" LCD TV with full 1080P resolotuion with a budget of £1300 or so ?
Oh and did I mention that the glass and silver bezel look AMAZING !
