Amazon.co.uk Review Iron Man, outside of comic-book circles, was never one of the better-known superheroes waiting to enjoy a big screen adventure, but in the aftermath of Jon Favreau’s superb movie, anticipation for 2010’s Iron Man 2 is rightly sky-high.
Fortunately, there’s the small matter of the excellent Blu-ray release of the first film to enjoy while the wait goes on, which offers reference-quality picture and audio to enjoy. And those combine to bring across one of the most downright-enjoyable superhero movies of recent times. Robert Downey Jr is an inspired casting choice as Tony Stark, whose genesis as Iron Man is covered by this first film. Generous with its humour and yet never afraid to throw a spectacular action sequence at the screen, there’s nonetheless real grown-up thinking sitting underneath Iron Man, and the film benefits enormously from it.
Most Blu-ray recommendations inevitably promote the 1080p picture quality of a movie as one of its major selling points. That’s certainly fair here. But also, the audio work on the Iron Man disc is superb. This is a full surround sound track in every sense, with the soundstage ramping up the noise and the intensity as the action takes hold, but also proving its quality in the film’s slower moments too. Backed up with extra features in high-definition too, it’s a rounded and very welcome Blu-ray release. --Jon Foster

Should be the reference for all other marvel films July 16, 2009 Mr Entropy (London) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
THE FILM
This is one of the best of the marvel adaptations, from one of the more neglected characters in the marvel universe. I was pleasantly surprised to see all parts of the film cohesively made. Where as spider man had excellent peter parker scenes but dire Spiderman action scenes, and where Xmen and hulk had great action scenes but fairly dry `normal people' scenes, Iron man I felt introduced the right balance, with comedy, serious moments, and actions scenes with real punch.
Robert Downey Jr is perfect in the role, always seemingly smarter and riskier in every single way than the other characters in the movie, and spares the time to crack some spot on jokes. He is convincing as a scientist as well as a playboy and manages to take on both roles convincingly. Gwyneth Paltrow's role was not an amazing one and too be honest many actresses of similar physical build and spoken class could have filled the role. Jeff Bridges was very effective and quite an unreadable character for much of the film.
Plot wise it was all good up until the battle with the final villain who transitioned from a real life kind of bad guy, to the straight up insane comic book bad guy a little too quickly. But arguably this film is about its action scenes and it does not disappoint, the special effects are great in that they might not seem like special effects, just complicated real life shots. The suit of armour is everything it should be, looks wise and equipment wise, featuring all the sorts of gaudy weaponry that it deserves. The only parts of the film where I thought the use of CGI, particularly the animation, weren't up to scratch were the mechanical fitting of his armour which just felt too fake, and the final boss battle which just edged itself out of a realistic presentation.
PRESENTATION
Iron man really is one of those show off films for a Bluray home theatre, it is wonderfully sharp and the facial textures and pores are extremely vivid, made more so by artificially enhancing your TVs sharpness, although this may make the background picture look slightly more grainy. Particular highlights are the desert scenes in the beginning and any of the daytime Iron man scenes, where the metal grain of the suit can look like brushed aluminium, which would never really come across as effectively on Standard Definition. The CGI is superbly believable and immersive, possibly with the exception of the end battle which was probably the weaker part of the film anyway.
The sound is excellent, with your home cinema system booted up there are plenty of ear candy moments, from the test firing of the missile system to the time he takes out the enemies version of it, but the whole movie is generally spot on. The music sound track is also extra well done, with the guitar used to back up many scenes giving the impression that Tony Stark really is a rock star in his field.
CONCLUSION
Overall this is a great film even for those who struggle to like such non real life style films, as this one is mostly done with a maintained realism and effects base. The action is coruscating and boldly impressive, and the viewing experience is further intensified by the almost immaculate presentation of the picture and sound on Bluray.
Detailed and involving ... November 21, 2008 P. White (Cambridge, United Kingdom) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
I greatly enjoyed this film and it was a delight to watch an escapist SF/Superhero story that was presented to adults rather than 12 year olds. The detail in the sets and SFX combined with the plausible(ish) story and excellent acting makes for a satisfying experience. The blu-ray is very good and includes a full disc worth of extras, all in HD, that are actually worth watching. It's refreshing to see concept art presented in 1080 for example because it's possible to appreciate the artwork rather than just the concept (if you see what I mean).
So, good story, good production, good acting, good transfer, good extras.
Amazing film, amazing quality October 12, 2008 Simon Donald (Scotland, Montrose) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
I have the American version that I bought the other week becuase I couldn't wait to get it!
The Blu Ray version is very a very good transfer and possibly one of the best out there. This is paramounts biggest release and its worth the wait.
The extras are really good too and unlike some blu ray's the extras are mostly shot in HD too.
It is also BD live meaning updates and interactive quizes etc are in there too.
The best part is the box art, pull off the swleeve and theres the man under the mask, epic!
Iron Man Blu Ray May 2, 2010 G. Wright (Liverpool, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Robert Downey Jr plays Iron Man a long running Marvel Comics character and wealthy weapons manufacturer who decides to turn his energies towards peace instead of war, and out of this decision emerges Iron man. A friend of mine recommended this movie to me ages ago but I've only just got round to seeing it as the blu ray version has stayed ridiculously expensive since its release well over a year ago, when are the studios going to stop ripping us off with high prices for Blu ray movies?
I don't know how accurate this version is to the comic book but I liked it and would recommend it.
Great Entertainment February 1, 2009 Neil Butler 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Iron Man was one of the successes of 2008. I expected it to be quite good, but it's actually a really well paced and very entertaining film. I thought Robert Downey Jnr was an odd choice to be the lead, but he turns out to be the best thing in it.
The script is sharp, there's no boring bits and the effects are great.
The Blu-ray picture and sound are excellent too.
Well recommended.
