It looks gorgeous and that may be enough for some February 23, 2010 Vinman666 (Essex, U.K.) 24 out of 24 found this review helpful
Mankind has pursued technology too far and been destroyed by it. Again. A small group of resistance fighters carry the hopes of all mankind. Again. But this time mankind is represented by 9 small stitched toys.
This is one of those films that will divide opinion. It looks fantastic. Imagine a story drawn lovingly frame by frame by French graphic artist Moebius and then pulled together as a movie by Delicatessen era Jean-Pierre Jeunet and you will begin to picture how this film looks (tonally I was reminded of Delicatessen and Alien Resurrection a number of times). There is so much attention to detail, like the dust motes floating in the scene where 9 first wakes up, and the tooling scratches on the brass tools used by the inventor. Stitchpunk, the style has been called but that's the characters; their world is very much steampunk.
So far, so good. If, like me, you can drool over the visuals, that might be enough for you. In terms of storytelling, the assistance of producers Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov retain a cinematic style that keeps the interest and there are genuinely atmospheric moments. The problem is that the story is a familiar one (as per the opening paragraph of this review), the only difference being the graphic style and the unusual characters. I watched 'Up' only a few days ago and had completely the opposite experience: I was moved by the story and stopped noticing the visuals after a few minutes. During '9' I admired the visuals without becoming lost in the story.
This is not a film for small children but given some of the dark stuff on the Cartoon Network nowadays, 7 and upwards I would expect to enjoy it.
The limited edition comes in a hardback book. Not with a book, in the book! It's a nice touch and the book is printed on quality paper. The content is largely scenes from the film with some storyboards, character designs and occasional soundbites from director or producers. Whether you'll appreciate it depends pretty much on your opinion of the film, i.e. it looks nice but there's not much content.
The Blu-ray transfer is excellent with lots of detail in the predominantly dark scenes, sound steerage is also good with lots going on in the surround channels. Extras include a commentary, deleted scenes and featurettes but also the original short film that was extended to make the movie.
Great visuals, was the story good enough? April 26, 2010 Maria Stegenwalner (St. Brelade, Jersey United Kingdom) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Obviously a large number of viewers have loved this movie, and I would have to say that I agree with the comments about the splendid attention to detail in the graphics, and I also understand the reviewers who say that they admired the visuals without becoming absorbed in the story. As I see it, there isn't really much to grab hold of as far as the story-telling is concerned. In a great war humanity has been annihilated, with self-motivated machines having nothing better to do than to chase these pint-sized receptacles of the soul of humanity. When the mighty animates finally defeat the machines, they finish with 'The world belongs to us now', and rather than feeling inspired, hopeful or even interested my thoughts were simply 'so what?!?' This is not salvation for humanity, this is not a new beginning, the characters are so one dimensional that there isn't even a great deal of solace in the individuals that survived.
It's worth seeing this film for the quirky, excellent visuals - it looks as if it should have something profound to say - don't be disappointed when it doesn't.
Worth a look. January 8, 2010 Mr. P. L. Ward (uk) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
Considering this was a independent low budget animated film of the highest quality and is Shane's first featuer film direction it makes all those big studio productions some what embarrassing, The Animation alone is fascinating.
It's a simple story, with not a huge amount of character development but then theres a reason for it as theses dolls make up part of the scientists soul. Theres so much attention to details theres enough to keep coming back for several viewings.
And it has a fantastic ending leaving you full of wonder and mystery.
Two things wrong, First is a bit too short, while it's not worth adding stuff for the sake of it i felt it needed just a little bit more time to push the story a bit, build up more tension and learn a bit more about our hero's. The other thing it film can't decide if it wants to be mature and appeal to adults or Teens. It kinda stuck in between swinging form one to the other but it was grand effort to try and make a modern CG film with a bit more punch and seriousness.
Nice soundtrack too.
Rating should be 4.5 but I'll add the extra half for DVD content. :)
Great film, great blu-ray January 11, 2010 Double Dutch (Rotterdam) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
In Holland 9 (nine) is already available on blu ray, and what a beautiful blu ray it is !
This CGI film is stunning with magnificent views of a completely destroyed city in which the story of 9 takes place. Nine (a doll) awakes with no memory at all in an abandond house. There are no people any more, actually there is no life at all. No animals, no plants, not even bacteria... nothing. Then 9 meets 2 and the story really kicks off when they meet a mechanical monster that takes 2 prisoner. Then 9 meets other dolls with numbers on their back. Together with 5 he starts a rescue attempt to save 2. Everything goes horribly wrong though and although they slay the mechanical monster, and meet a few other dolls, a new more powerfull monster comes to life and steals the soul of 2. All this happens in the first 15/20 minutes of the film. Of course I could tell you the rest of the story, but to my opinion that would spoil the fun.
The film lookes like a stop-motion film, but is CGI. The original 9 (a nine minutes short film that was nominated for an oscar) is on the disc too and that one is stop-motion. It's very nice to compare the two films. Some people said that the original short is beter, but I don't think so. It's an excellent short film, but it ask more questions than it answers. Especially the end is much clearer in the film than in the short, although it's the same in both. There is also one big difference between the two films. In the short, nobody says a word, in the long film version there are voices, the most beautiful one is from Christopher Plummer who is 1. Hobbit Elijah Wood is the youthfull 9 and the voice is spot on.
9 Is not a film for small children though, it's much to scary for them, nor will they understand the end; 9 would be the minimum age to see 9.
9 is a great film: 4 star material, not 5 stars simple because the films does have its flaws. The blu ray is very sharp and has nice extra's, that gives you the right amount of information. As a blu-ray product this one does score a 5 star. I highly recommend this film.
Fallout with sock puppets January 7, 2010 J. Stijsiger (The Netherlands) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Its a shame i never saw this in the theater. it is a good movie. The visuals are very well done and are the best portrait of the post apocalypse i have seen in years. The plot is very simple but for me it works and it feels that is doesn't need more but do not expect everything to be explained within the first ten minutes of the film. Do not expect a happy movie the wasteland is dark an unforgiving, but you will be gripped by the story of the tiny puppets. This is definitely one i will get on dvd
